A couple of years back now.
I released my first product, and it sold quite well.
At that time, I was using PayPal to take payments and Stripe through my ThriveCart account.
And all was dandy…
I was selling my product through affiliates I recruited, and I had about $2,000 in my PayPal account.
(Affiliate commissions for one of the affiliates I had.)
Until I got this email from PayPal, some of which is below:
Dear Zaf Barnes,
You can no longer do business with PayPal.
A recent review of your account activity has determined that you’re in violation of PayPal’s Acceptable Use Policy.
As a result, your account has been permanently limited, and you won’t be able to conduct any further business using PayPal.
This is permitted under the PayPal User Agreement sections Restricted Activities and Restricted Activities Holds, and Other Actions We May Take.
You must remove all references to PayPal from your website(s) and/or auction(s), including removing PayPal as a payment option, the PayPal logo, and PayPal shopping cart.
If you have funds in your PayPal balance, we’ll hold it for up to 180 days. These funds may be used to satisfy any obligations you may have under the User Agreement.
After that period, we’ll email you with information on how to access any remaining funds.
What the fu*k I thought.
I had $2k sitting in my PayPal account, I couldn’t touch. The money that I needed to pay my affiliate with.
NOT good at all.
Six Months later, I finally got the money out of the account…
Luckily enough, I’d managed to get hold of the money to pay the affiliate way before then.
Turns out I had an old business PayPal account that I hadn’t used for years for eBay, and it was still active.
I created a PayPal account specifically for my business, NOT realizing that I still had this other PayPal business account.
And NOW I’m banned for life from using PayPal business…
Oh well…
At the time, I thought I was completely fubared.
But you know what? I was completely wrong.
You DON’T need PayPal to run a business.
So if you ever go to buy one of my products and wonder why I don’t use PayPal, now you know!
